Despite its engaging concept and moments of brilliance, the game is held back by these shortcomings, making it a journey of both delight and disappointment.

Without the gimmick, game gets repetitive and boring really quick, it feels like you're incentivized not to play now but later instead to see other phantoms in the same temples as you are.

With the Ice Whip, however, you can cover absurd amounts of distance very quickly, and I would bump it up a tier or two if you choose to run with said whip.

Say hello to the most limited movement option in the game. A high-jump sounds good on paper, but in most situations, your whip (especially with Long Whip or Double Jump) will get you as high as you need to be.

Freedom of movement is critical in this game, and the Wings blessing grants you ridiculous amounts of horizontal distance while also negating fall damage due to its slow-falling effect.

If you’re a fan of retro platformers, then this action-adventure game may still be worth checking out, but, unless you have a burning desire to play, it’s hard to fully recommend

For fans of the Indiana Jones movies, Phantom Abyss will feel like something out of a dream. As players slyly avoid traps and use their whip to grapple out of danger, they’ll truly channel the fedora wearing adventure hero.

Phantom Abyss also taps into some roguelike elements with its blessing system, which offers you random power-ups for the run’s duration in exchange for collected treasure. Treasure is found in chests hidden throughout each temple, redeemable at statues between floors that offer one of two presented blessings, adding other strategic decisions to the action.

It’s common for roguelikes to corner a player into punching a hole in their monitor. However, they need to get the balance between rage and reward just right in order to be enjoyable.

One of the game’s highlights is how it cleverly bakes a sense of community into its design through the implementation of phantoms – ghosts of other players who came before you and were bested by the temple. Beyond merely providing a glimpse of where others died, these phantoms are both an assistance and a hindrance, as they activate the many Phantom Abyss Gameplay proximity-based traps in each temple.

In terms of consistency, I'd say the void whip is the best. Disabling the guardian is hands down the strongest thing there is and it allows you to take as much time as you need for most rooms.

The red moving platforms will stay forever unless you have spawned into the main hub where the whips are located.
